The Racha mountains are enclosed by dense woods, making one-day skitour trips nearly impossible. Therefore, we will grab our tents and climb higher up to the alpine zone. The route to the basecamp will take 2–3 hours with 600–700 meters of vertical gain.

We will navigate to two valleys of northern aspect and spend three days in each. A day of rest in between will be dedicated solely to exploring the unique traditions of winemaking in Racha and enjoying local cuisine.

A cosy family hotel in the town of Oni will be our home in ‘civilization’. We will spend here five nights in total: the first two nights, two nights in between, and one last night. Traditional Georgian meals and house wine will quickly regain our strength for the next adventure.

Day 10

We pack up and take a car transfer back to Tbilisi or Kutaisi.

Our home in Racha is a family-run cosy guesthouse in the town of Oni. Accommodation type—twin hotel rooms with amenities; and three good home-made meals a day. We will stay here at the start of the programme (2 nights), on the rest day (2 nights), and at the end (1 night). Please note that the guesthouse serves only traditional Georgian meals.

The tented camp is our home in the mountains. We will spend 4 days outside of civilization and will need to cook meals for ourselves. Of course, we will discuss the menu with you and arrange everything we need in advance.

Note. If you are allergic to food or have specific preferences, please indicate this in your booking application.

Please make sure to pack for four full days of backcountry expedition and grab some casual clothes to wear in the guesthouse.

The temperature at the basecamp will be −2...−8°C (+17...+28°F) during the day, and −10...−15°C (+5...+14°F) at night. We recommend a sleeping bag with comfort limits of −10...−15°C (+5...+14°F), and a pad with an R-value of at least 2. We also strongly recommend a durable tent (winter or all-season) and camping stoves fitting screw-on canisters.

Closer to the start of our expedition, we will organize a WhatsApp chat to finalize the details and make sure that everyone has tents, stoves and other camping gear.

Please consult the list of gear featuring our comments and recommendations. If you need any kind of advice, we will be glad to help.
